SHAH ALAM, Oct 25 — The Selangor government will launch the Rakan Bumi Sekolah movement in secondary schools statewide to encourage the younger generation to be more involved in addressing climate change and environmental sustainability.
State executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the initiative will be followed by the Rakan Bumi Climate Action Project, which aims to empower students to become part of the climate action movement in their communities.
She said more than 1,000 students are set to join both programmes, which are being implemented with the cooperation of government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector.

“The Rakan Bumi Sekolah programme combines elements of creativity and innovation in the form of a competition. Among the activities are storytelling with sustainability themes such as plastic-free (initiatives), recycling and its impact on the community, and climate change.
“Rakan Bumi Climate Action Project, backed by a state government grant, emphasises the implementation of projects such as community gardens, composting and zero-waste initiatives that involve local communities,” she said when launching the Environment Carnival at Elmina Lakeside Mall here today.
Jamaliah added that the state government is fortifying plastic-free policies, including by considering amendments to business licence conditions to ensure all commercial premises are fully involved by 2030.
The Environment Carnival, organised by various government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and private firms, featured 13 exhibits, a 3km fun run, interactive quizzes, recycle exchange and many environmental education activities.
