KAJANG, Sept 28 — The Selangor government is aiming to implement a ban on e-cigarettes and vapes by year end, said state executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin.
She said her office is waiting for feedback from the Health Ministry (MOH), which is studying the proposal on the ban, before bringing it to the state Executive Council.
“We want to see what the narrative is (on the enforcement of the ban) from the federal government. The state also hopes the ban is comprehensive, to eradicate vape use.
“However, if a full ban cannot be established, vape control mechanisms must be set up with the cooperation of the state and federal governments to ensure legislation can be tightened and enforcement oversight is effective,” she said when met after officiating the Kembara Denggi Selangor event here today.
Jamaliah said Selangor cannot jump the gun in implementing a tobacco or vape ban.
“This ban will take time as we want to ensure enforcement can be harmonised between each agency, involving the Selangor State Health Department (JKNS), local authorities, and other agencies such as the Selangor State Education Department.
“For enforcement coordination and legislation, we will hold a workshop for each agency before the proposal is tabled to the Executive Council,” Jamaliah said.
Previously, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the MOH is aiming to ban vape sales by next June in stages, starting with the open system before being expanded to all product types.
