SHAH ALAM, Sept 9 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari has strongly condemned the drone attack on one of the vessels participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) humanitarian mission near Tunisian waters this morning.
Describing the incident as an act of intimidation, he said the assault was aimed at obstructing the flotilla from fulfilling its humanitarian objectives.
“This action is a form of provocation and intimidation intended to prevent this mission from achieving its goals.
“I strongly condemn this act and hope international authorities will provide protection and guarantee the safety of all involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla humanitarian mission,” Amirudin said in a statement.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, named after the Arabic word for “steadfastness”, is made up of some 20 vessels carrying people from various countries, including doctors, journalists, and campaigners.
The initiative aims to challenge Israel’s blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Earlier today, it was reported that one of the main vessels of the GSF, known as the “Family Boat”, was struck by what is suspected to be a drone off the coast of Tunisia.
According to Anadolu Ajansi, the boat, sailing under the Portuguese flag, was carrying GSF Steering Committee members, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and activist Yasemin Acar.
The Menteri Besar stressed that the journey represents more than humanitarian relief, which symbolises courage and collective resistance against injustice.
“This journey is not an easy one. It is a symbol of bravery and a shared voice against oppression.
“Selangor will always stand strong with the people. May this mission arrive safely and may the world continue to unite in giving hope and support to our brothers and sisters in that land of trials,” he said.
Around 150 activists, including Tunisians, Turkish citizens, and others from Europe, Africa, and Asia, are participating in the initiative.
The flotilla set sail from Barcelona in late August, along with another group from Genoa, Italy, and is expected to depart Tunisia for Gaza on Wednesday.
