Ex-unit trust consultant faces four charges over RM215,000 fraud

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — A former unit trust consultant was charged in two Sessions Courts today with four counts of cheating involving RM215,000 in alleged investment fraud committed between 2021 and 2022.

Amran Mohd Amin, 58, pleaded not guilty to all charges read separately before Judges Azrul Darus and Norma Ismail.

Before Judge Azrul, the accused was charged with deceiving two individuals into investing in a purported unit trust scheme under Kenanga Investors Bhd. The victims issued cheques for RM130,000 and RM65,000, which he allegedly used to purchase unit trusts for his own benefit.

The offences were allegedly committed at Kenanga Investors Bhd, Kenanga Tower, Jalan Tun Razak, between July 20, 2021, and February 14, 2022.

Amran was charged under Subsection 179(b) of the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of at least RM1 million, upon conviction.

In a separate court, the accused and his former wife Nadihah Nawi were jointly charged before Judge Norma with deceiving two other individuals into issuing cheques worth RM10,000 each. The funds were allegedly used to purchase unit trusts under her account.

These offences were allegedly committed at the same location between January 20 and June 27, 2022. The charges fall under the same Act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which allows for similar penalties.

The court granted Amran bail of RM70,000 with one surety and ordered him to report to the Securities Commission (SC) once a month. The case is set for mention on October 2.

Deputy Public Prosecutors K. Mageswary and Adibah Saiful Bahri from the SC are handling the prosecution. The accused was unrepresented.

On July 30, Nadihah, a former unit trust agent, also pleaded not guilty in a separate case involving two charges of cheating involving RM20,000.
