MEX II highway project false claims: Abu Sahid, Yap to face more charges

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — Maju Holdings Sdn Bhd director Tan Sri Abu Sahid Mohamed, who was charged at the Sessions Court today with 17 counts of criminal breach of trust and money laundering related to the MEX II Highway project, will face seven additional charges of misusing funds involving the same project at the Shah Alam Sessions Court soon.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib said former construction company director Datuk Yap Wee Leong will also be charged over the same project.

Sahid will be charged with seven counts of misusing property under Section 403 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 109 of the same code, involving a total of RM145 million.

"Yap will be charged with 18 counts: nine under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009 involving RM209 million, and nine under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, involving RM387 million," he said in a statement.

Akram added that Sahid was charged today with four counts of criminal breach of trust involving RM313 million and 13 counts of money laundering involving RM139.2 million.

“Yap was also charged with using 17 false claim documents between June 2017 and April 2018.

“The documents involved claims for earthworks, drainage, slopes, and subgrade construction for the Putrajaya to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Highway project, namely MEX II, with values ranging from RM9 million to RM28 million each, bringing the total to over RM314 million,” he said.

The next mention for both cases has been set for November 3.
